  • How to cheaply upgrade your PS4 to 2TB

External storage is collapsing in price. Earlier this month, we picked up a 2TB Toshiba drive for just £69.99 and it emerged as the overall winner in our Xbox One hard drive upgrade guide. Just a week later, the Seagate Expansion STBX2000401 dropped in price on Amazon to just £59.99 - good for Xbox One, but potentially an essential buy for PlayStation 4 owners too.
In our PS4 upgrade guide we found that using an SSD delivered the best experience when it came to producing shorter loading times, faster texture streaming, and generally smoother day-to-day operation of the console. However, these gains didn't translate consistently across all titles and in the end we found that the Hitachi Z7K1000 (a 7200 1TB traditional mechanical hard drive) provided us with the best price/performance ratio while also offering up a significant increase in storage capacity over the stock PS4 drive. Right now it costs around £50 and that's pretty decent value for a 7200rpm drive.
However, clearly a doubling of storage for just £10 more represents a much more enticing deal. The fact that the drive itself is contained in an enclosure shouldn't put you off. The chassis can be pried apart by carefully pushing a screwdriver, scalpel or knife through the grooves at the side, before pushing down to lift and unclip the top and bottom plastics from each other. This has to be done slowly around the unit to avoid any damage, but it is a fairly simple process that doesn't take long.
