  • Bungie Cancels Destiny 2 Curse Of Osiris Stream To Address Recent Controversy Instead

The third of Bungie's three Destiny 2 livestreams dedicated to Curse of Osiris has been canceled. In lieu of its planned stream on Wednesday, the developer will instead release a blog post that shares some "higher priority information," which seems to be in response to the recent uproar over the discovery of an undisclosed XP scaling system.
"Tomorrow, we had planned to conduct the final stream prior to the launch of Curse of Osiris to show off some of the weapons and armor the expansion includes," Bungie's David "DeeJ" Dague wrote on the developer's forums. "Instead, we are investing all our efforts into delivering some higher priority information about Destiny 2. You'll hear from studio leadership about their assessment of Destiny all up, they'll talk about our goals for the game going forward, and you'll also learn about how we're reacting to your feedback with some game updates that will arrive in the next few weeks."
All of this will be shared in a post on Bungie's website at some point on Wednesday. The stream has seemingly been canceled altogether, and Activision confirmed with GameSpot that there won't be one this week. It's unclear if there are still plans to share those Curse of Osiris details at some other point. There's not much time left to do so, as its release is planned for December 5.
Game director Luke Smith recently announced that, at some point this week, Bungie would share details about some key changes coming to Destiny 2. He also said that he and project lead Mark Noseworthy would be "answering some questions and addressing community feedback we've been reading since launch."
Although Smith offered no further specifics, it seems likely that complaints about the perceived lack of an end-game will be addressed. Perhaps just as importantly, they may also discuss the aforementioned controversy that emerged last week. A Reddit user discovered that Destiny 2 limited the amount of XP you earned when taking part in certain activities, such as Public Events. Bungie acknowledged this hidden system was in place and disabled it, stating, "We are not happy with the results." However, this seemingly welcome change coincided with another adjustment, this one doubling the amount of XP needed to level up at the level cap. Bungie did not acknowledge this change at first, only later confirming it to be the case and informing players it is working on an update to the in-game UI to make this change clear.
Due to the way rewards are doled out after level 20--each rank-up earns you a Bright Engram--there has been some concern that the level scaling (and subsequent required XP increase) were motivated by microtransactions. Bright Engrams can be purchased with real-world money, and although their contents are cosmetic in nature, players naturally assumed that anything being done to limit players' acquisition of free Bright Engrams is driven by a desire to encourage microtransactions.
Although part of the focus for tomorrow's stream was set to be gear, we have already gotten a look at some of the new Curse of Osiris armor and weapons. We'll report back with anything more we learn about the expansion prior to its release, as well as the plans Bungie shares in its blog post.
