  • 15 Holiday Movies Streaming Right Now On Netflix

Now that we’re in the middle of December you should be knee-deep in holiday cheer (and probably wrapping paper.) Though, if you’re feeling like a bit of a Grinch, we’re here to get you in the spirit of things with a list of 15 holiday movies you can watch on Netflix right now--because who wants to actually go to a movie theater on Christmas anyway?
If Christmas movies aren’t your thing but you’re still looking for some streaming selects, you can check out what’s new on Netflix in December and our list of the 30 best Netflix-exclusive movies and shows of 2018.

    1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot... but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did not!
This live-action re-imagining of Dr. Seuss’s classic Christmas story is almost a classic itself. Jim Carrey’s portrayal of the Grinch is spot on and his friendship with Cindy Lou Who is enough to make anyone’s heart grow three sizes. It’s a heartwarming movie to watch with the family, reminding us that Christmas isn’t just about material gifts, it’s about love and community.
    Metacritic Score: 46

    2. The Princess Switch (2018)

Stacey, a baker from Chicago, enters a baking contest in Belgravia. While she’s there she runs into a princess, Lady Margaret, who happens to look just like her. Overwhelmed with being a princess, Lady Margaret convinces Stacy to switch places with her so she can experience a normal life. The plot is absolutely ridiculous, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a sticky-sweet romantic comedy both teens and adults who used to like ABC Family original movies will enjoy.

    3. A Very Murray Christmas (2015)

This 2015 Netflix Original is a musical comedy featuring an all star cast including George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, and Miley Cyrus to name a few. The story is told by a total of 15 comedians across 17 musical numbers. If you’re a fan of Bill Murray or acclaimed director Sofia Coppola, this is especially for you. If you don’t like musicals, pass.
    Metacritic Score: 68

    4. Love Actually (2003)

While it received generally mixed reviews at the time, over the years Love Actually has been solidified as a popular and well-liked cult-Christmas classic. The movie follows nine interconnected relationships in the weeks leading up to Christmas, with each individual in a different stage of love. At the time of its release the telling of plural interconnected relationships was kind of a new thing. Its popularity and style would go on to inspire the likes of similar rom-coms such as He’s Just Not That Into You and Valentine’s Day.
    Metacritic Score: 55

    5. The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

Hitting 20 million streams the first week it was live, The Christmas Chronicles is easily the most popular Netflix Original holiday movie this year. Starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus, the story follows a sister and brother whose crazy ploy to catch Santa in the act turns into a journey to save Christmas after they crash his sleigh. Despite being a pretty predictable Christmas movie, Russel’s charismatic performance keeps it entertaining and fun.
    Metacritic Score: 52

    6. White Christmas (1954)

Set a decade after WWII, White Christmas tells the story of two army veterans turned musical performers who decide to travel to Vermont alongside two sisters to perform in a Christmas show. It’s a classic holiday movie filled with timeless Christmas music, cheesy romance, and one heartwarming Christmas miracle.

    7. The Christmas Project (2016)

Set in 1986, four school-aged brothers come together during Christmastime to get payback against the baddest bullies at their middle school. Although this movie tries to serve up some serious A Christmas Story vibes, it ditches the dark adult humor for a more “family-friendly” tone.

    8. Dreamworks Holiday Classics (2011)

Dreamworks Holiday Classics is an episodic series featuring four animated shorts from some of Dreamworks biggest titles: Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury from How To Train Your Dragon, Donkey’s Caroling Christmas-tacular from Shrek, and Merry Madagascar plus The Madagascar Penguins from--you guessed it--Madagascar. All of them are very enjoyable for children and adults alike and feature some fun-loving familiar faces.

    9. Kung Fu Panda Holiday (2010)

For some reason this Dreamworks short isn’t listed in the Dreamworks Holiday Classics collection, but it’s just as good as the rest! In this 25-minute-long Kung Fu Panda short, Po celebrates his favorite holiday, Winter Feast. Caught between his duties as the Dragon Warrior, Po must make difficult a decision and learn the importance of putting family first. It’s a super cute story good for everyone. The voice of Jack Black makes it all that much better.

    10. Bad Santa (2003)

Bad Santa is an R-rated dark comedy void of cliche Christmas cheer and chock full of unadulterated adult humor. The story follows two criminals who get away with robbing shopping malls every year by posing as Santa and his elf. It’s a comedic redemption story about a depressed alcoholic who, through very strange circumstances, discovers the meaning of Christmas. Albeit a bit dated in its humor, it’s a great pick for the scrooges out there.
    Metacritic Score: 70

    11. George Balanchine's The Nutcracker (1993)

Filled to the brim with toy soldiers and sugar plum fairies, George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is the 1993 movie version of the Ballet classic. Featuring the famous New York City Ballet, this stage movie follows the original tale of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which tells the story of one girl’s magical Christmas fantasy.

    12. The Great British Baking Show: Holidays (2016)

It’s a holiday reunion on The Great British Baking Show! Some of the past season’s favorites return to compete in making some delectable Christmas-themed treats like yule logs and mince pies. Warning: This show will cause major cravings.

    13. Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas (1999)

All of your classic Disney friends are here for three lighthearted Christmas stories. Of the three, the best is easily the retelling of the classic tale “The Gift of the Magi”. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse give up a prized possession so they can give each other something special for Christmas. Each of the tales are cheerful, timeless, and have a nice lesson in the meaning of giving.

    14. A Christmas Prince (2017)

A Christmas Prince is the retelling of the cliche Cinderella story with a holiday spin. You know, a normal girl accidentally becomes a princess and the prince has no idea who she actually is type of fantasy. Despite its total predictability, the Netflix Original still manages to be a cute holiday film. You probably wouldn’t watch it twice, but you’ll enjoy it through the first time.

    15. Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure (2011)

After a runaway Christmas Elf almost ruins Christmas by crashing Santa’s sleigh, it’s up to everyone’s favorite St. Bernard, Beethoven, to save Christmas. It’s a fun holiday adventure filled with silly slapstick comedy and one very handsome (now talking) dog.

    Bonus Yule-log!

Don’t want to watch a movie but still want to get those Christmas-time warm fuzzies? Want to have a fire but lack a fireplace? Behold, Fireplace For Your Home--the perfect television aesthetic to warm up the place (metaphorically) and achieve those cozy vibes you seek.
