Essential Comics This Week
Each Wednesday is new comic day and determining which titles are worth checking out can be a daunting task, especially if you're trying to keep your spending under a certain limit. We've gone through the list of new releases to help you decide which books you need to read on Wednesday, March 9.
Vision #5
Written by Tom King
Art by Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Jordie Bellaire
Vision is about to find out what happened to Grim Reaper, and he probably won't like the answer when he finds out his wife killed him. Vision raises the bar for what a super-hero comic can and should be, as this series feels like a horror story more than anything else. King, Walta, and Bellaire have crafted one of the most interesting books at Marvel that plays well to classic Marvel fans and to horror fans as well.
All-New Wolverine #6
Written by Tom Taylor
Art by David Lopez
Issue #6 will be wrapping up the first art of this series, featuring X-23 taking over the mantle of Wolverine. Writer Tom Taylor is crafting a really fun team book that's full of some really intense fight sequences. Lots of Wolverine purists have finally found themselves enjoying this series, with a new person under the mask. In addition, David Lopez is kicking out some great looking art that really moves this story and engages the reader.
Ms. Marvel #5
Written by G. Willow Wilson
Art by Nico Leon
The newest volume of Ms. Marvel has really put the spotlight not just on the character, Kamala Kahn, but also how she fits into the larger Marvel universe. Her life is really a mess right now, after being kicked out of the Avengers and doing poorly in school. While a series like this may not appeal to older readers as much as it does to a younger generation, writer G Willow Wilson has crafted a dynamic and interesting character that gives insight into what it is like to be a teenage superhero in a Muslim family.
Spider-Man/Deadpool #3
Written by Joe Kelly
Art by Ed McGuinness
This is such a weird team-up, and strangely enough, it works. Spider-Man isn't a huge fan of Deadpool and his antics, so Spider-Man is less of a jokester and more of an annoyed teammate. There's something going on at Parker Industries, so hopefully, this not-so-dynamic duo can shed some light on that. Joe Kelly delivers something comical that isn't over-the-top, and artist Ed McGuinness' style is perfect for the tone of this book.
The Haunted Mansion #1

Art by Jorge Coehlo
Marvel has been turning a few of their concepts and rides into comic books, and they've been pretty cool so far. The Haunted Mansion is the newest mini-series, and they couldn't have picked a better writer. Joshua Williamson, who has worked on books like Ghosted and Nailbiter takes charge, and we're excited to see where he goes with this. Plus, we'll get a little insight into the story behind the ride.
Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4
Written by James Tynion IV
Art by Freddie Williams
Welcome to the sandbox where your childhood nostalgia reigns supreme. While having Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the same book sounds a bit weird, writer James Tynion IV makes this work. All the characters from the separate universes mesh together nicely. Both he and artist Freddie Williams II have a lot of love for this project, and it really shows in this book.
The Dark and Bloody #2

The DC imprint, Vertigo, has in quite a resurgence. The publisher is creating a whole new line of books that really fit the Vertigo mold. Last month, we saw the first issue of The Dark and Bloody, which is a solid start to this new horror series. It's full of mystery and intrigue. Writer Shawn Aldridge and artist Scott Godlewski put together something that really grips the reader from issue one.
Descender #11

Art by Dustin Nguyen
Issue #11 marks the end of the second arc for Descender. Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen have solidified themselves as a great science-fiction duo. There's still a lot of mystery within this book as readers don't know what the Harvesters want, and what's going to happen to Tim-21. This is one of the most unique series Image Comics is publishing, and if you're a fan of sci-fi, then this is a series to check out.
Bunker #15

Art by Joe Infurnari
What would you do if you and your friends found a secret bunker? What would you do if that same bunker was sent to you by your future self? That's the original question that The Bunker posed and since then, the series has become so much more. Writer Joshua Fialkov and artist Joe Infurnari explore each of the characters in the story and their relationships since they found out about their futures. If you're looking for something with a bit more depth, this is for you.
X-Files Deviations #1

IDW is running a whole series of books under the "Deviations" banner. Each story takes on a popular property and deviates from the original source material. In this X-Files book, Fox Mulder is the one that's abducted by aliens and Samantha Mulder joins forces with Scully to help find him. This should be an interesting story. IDW has done well with the X-Files franchise, and this is a must buy for X-Files fans.
Mars Attacks Occupation #1
Written by John Layman
Art by Andy Kuhn
IDW has also done quite a few Mars Attacks series, but this newest mini-series is probably one of the most exciting. Martians now rule over humanity, and this story will be about Earthlings trying to liberate themselves. What's really getting us excited about this book is that John Layman, known for his work on Chew, will be writing this with Andy Kuhn on art. There should be a good level of humor and fun here.
Justice League Volume 7 HC
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Jason Fabok
DC's biggest story right now is "Darkseid War," taking place in Justice League. The Justice League is caught in between a battle between Darkseid and Anti-Monitor, and part one of this story changes everything. What's really cool about this large-scope story is that it's all contained within this series and nowhere else. Readers don't need to read anything else to know what's going on. It's the perfect, epic standalone story.
Thors TPB

Art by Chris Sprouse
Marvel's Secret Wars event delivered a whole bunch of mini-series based in Battleworld. One of the top books during the event was Thors, and it's all collected here. Thors revolves around a murder mystery where one of the members of Thor Corps has been murdered, and it's up to the rest of the team to find out what happened. It's a mixture of super-heroes and police procedural. If you're going to read anything from Secret Wars, this is it.
