Nvidia Reveals Impressive-Sounding $250 GPU, the GTX 1060
Nvidia has further bolstered its line of Pascal GPUs today with the GTX 1060, a new, cheaper option to complement the recently launched GTX 1070 and 1080 cards.
The 1060's price starts at $250 and, according to Nvidia, offers "GTX 980-level performance." We'll have to wait and see if that claim holds up once third-party benchmarks can be done, but that would be impressive as 980 cards still sell for at least $400-$500.
The 1060 features 6 GB of GDDR5 memory and a clock speed of 1.7 GHz, which Nvidia says you can "easily" overclock to 2 GHz. It also has 1,280 CUDA cores and requires just 120 watts while running VR and Direct X 11/12 games.
Custom versions of the 1060 will be available from companies like EVGA, Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte beginning on July 19. Additionally, Nvidia itself will offer a Founder's Edition version on the same day for $299. Similar to the 1070 and 1080 Founder's Editions, it's said to be made from "premium materials and components, including a faceted die-cast aluminum body machine finished for strength and rigidity and a thermal solution designed to run cool and quiet."
Nvidia made a strong showing with both the GTX 1070 and 1080, so expectations will be high for this latest card--particularly with AMD offering a solid $200 option in the RX 480.
