  • American Horror Story Roanoke: 5 Things We Learned From Episode 2 [SPOILERS]

Last week, the sixth season of American Horror Story debuted on FX. What was different about this season was that the theme was never revealed to the masses prior to the show's airing, so going in, the first episode was a complete mystery.
The season premiere, which we go into a bit more detail here, delved into the legend of Roanoke mixed with the true crime format that interviews people and features re-enactments.
The second episode, featuring the "true life" story of Shelby and Matt, gave the audience a bit more insight into just what is going on and what we can expect for the rest of the season. Here's what we learned.
    Ghosts in the House

The first episode alluded to the fact that Matt and Shelby's new house is haunted. We caught a quick glimpse, here and there, of what looked like a nurse, wandering the halls. The second episode solidifies that and gives the audience a bit more insight into what spirits walks the halls.
First, there's Priscilla. We don't know too much about her. Lee's daughter, Flora, can see and communicate with her, and we later find out that Flora hates all the bloodshed. Shelby and Matt see Priscilla (at least we think it's Priscilla) towards the end of the episode, and she's outside of the house, which is new for American Horror Story lore. Normally, you have to live out your afterlife in the building you were killed in. There are also two other ghosts in the house that we know of, which we will delve into in a moment. What's really important about these ghosts is one thing.
They Want to Kill the People Living in the House

There was an extremely creepy moment where Lee and her ex-husband Mason are searching the house for their daughter Flora. The parents find her daughter in a tiny room under the stairs, talking to someone. When the door is opened, Flora says Priscilla is gone.
She tells her parents that she wants to give Priscilla her doll, so they (we're not exactly sure who this mysterious "they" is at this point) don't kill everyone. Apparently, "they" are saving Flora for last.
They Weren't the First People to Leave the House

Matt and Shelby discover a secret bunker in the backyard, after seeing an apparition appear near it (said ghost could have been Priscilla). Inside the bunker, they discover a tape of the man that lived there before them, Alias Cunningham.
In 1997, Cunningham was there to write a true crime novel about two murderous women that lived in the house. He started experiencing the same things that Matt and Shelby are currently going through, and he lived in the bunker. He was apparently the same man from the video in the first episode that showed the man with the pig head in the background.
A Couple of Murdering Nurses Haunt the House

Bridget and Miranda were the two murdering nurses that Alias Cunningham researched for his book. The two women bought the house and turned it into an old age home. They had specific rules for anyone coming into their care: one involving the first letter of the elderly person's name.
Six elderly patients are under their care, and each of the first letters in their name spells out the word "murder." When the two kill one of the patients, they put the first letter of their victim's name on the wall. They get to "MURDE" before the two disappear forever. What caused them to disappear?
    There's Something Worse than Ghosts

Cunningham suggests that while the ghosts inhabiting the house are dangerous, there is actually something even worse. Bridget and Miranda didn't finish spelling out "murder" with their victims because someone or something stopped them.
Flora's new friend "Priscilla" mentioned that something wants to kill everyone. Could it be the man with the pig head? Could it be the cult that is messing with Matt and Shelby? Most likely, it's something the viewer hasn't seen yet.
Once again, the new format for the season is what really makes this season work. It's breathed new life into a show that had a few bumps in the road over the past couple of seasons. Because the team behind the show has been so secretive about this season, the show is really keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. It's a surprise again.
In addition, American Horror Story layers elements to the show, so it never really gets stale throughout each season. While the first episode dealt with cultish elements, the second really added a lot of ghosts. There is a lot more of the same between the two episodes, but it turned out to be a relatively entertaining episode that distracts the audience by raising questions about what's going on in this little house with this married couple. Basically, Matt & Shelby bought the worst house in America. It's probably worse than Murder House.
