  • Divorces in Stardew Valley Are Soul-Destroying

Stardew Valley version 1.1 recently went into beta, and it includes some new features that open up new opportunities for marriage. Oh, and it also adds a way for you to end that marriage and send the person you used to love into a spiralling pit of sadness.
That's right, divorce is now available in Stardew Valley, and Reddit user Harvestable tested the new feature "for science." To end your marriage, you have to go to the mayor's house and select one of his books. It costs 50,000g to divorce your spouse, but you have until the end of the day to back out if you change your mind. If you don't, your spouse will be blindsided and will be moved out by the time you wake up. You can see just how heart-shattering this is in the gallery below, courtesy of Harvestable.

And if you talk to your spouse, they don't feel too good about the whole situation. In fact, it's heartbreaking. You can see Alex's reaction in the gallery above.
There are still some bugs surrounding the divorce feature. If your spouse is still in your house after the split, don't worry: it's just a bug. Your spouse's room and outdoor area will also be gone once you divorce them, but any furniture you placed in their room will be stuck in a black void. This bug is fixed, but hasn't been added to the beta just yet.
To access the version 1.1 beta, all you have to do is right-click on Stardew Valley in your Steam Library and go to Properties. Then you'll need to click the Betas tab and select "beta" from the drop-down menu. Once you've done this, it should download an update, granting you access to all the new features. Developer ConcernedApe says the beta version is unlikely to corrupt your save files, but it's recommended to back them up regardless.
Version 1.1 goes live for everyone on Monday, October 3. You can check out the full list of version 1.1 features here.
Stardew Valley released on Mac and Linux a couple months ago. PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U ports are in the works, in addition to the anticipated multiplayer mode.
