Skyrim Special Edition patch causing game crashes on PC, PS4, Xbox one

The latest Skyrim Special Edition patch appears to be causing problems - game crashes - on all three platforms: PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Players trying to load their saved Skyrim Special Edition games are reporting freezes and then abrupt game closures. Commenters on Steam, on Reddit, the Bethesda Support forums and Twitter all appear to be experiencing the same thing. We've also separately been contacted by readers affected by this.
It looks like the Skyrim Special Edition patches responsible are 1.1 on PC and 1.03 on PS4 and Xbox One. We loaded our PC Skyrim Special Edition save and everything worked fine, but we haven't had a chance to test the other platforms.
