  • Mario Creator Miyamoto Says Nintendo Almost Made Minecraft

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Nintendo classics like Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and more, has said that he thinks Nintendo should have made Minecraft.
Speaking to Glixel, the games industry legend said, "I do like Minecraft, but really more from the perspective of the fact that I really feel like that's something we should have made. We had actually done a lot of experiments that were similar to that back in the N64 days and we had some designs that were very similar. It's really impressive to me to see how they've been able to take that idea and turn it into a product."
Minecraft was developed by Mojang, and five years after release it continues to sell extremely well. Microsoft then acquired Mojang and Minecraft in 2014. Nintendo, meanwhile, has attempted to make its own game with a more user creation focus in Super Mario Maker.
Super Mario Maker launched in 2015 on Wii U and recently got a 3DS re-release. We enjoyed the console version here at GameSpot, with critic Justin Haywald awarding it a 9. For more, check out our full Super Mario Maker review.
