  • Another Video Game Is on Netflix's House of Cards [SPOILERS]

[THIS POST CONTAINS HOUSE OF CARDS STORY SPOILERS]
Past seasons of Netflix's political drama House of Cards featured references to video games, and now we've learned the same is true for Season 4. This time around Frank Underwood, who is now President of the United States, is passing time by playing Agar.io, one of the top trending games of all of 2015.
Here is a clip from the show (via Kotaku):
Sam Smith, a community manager at Agar.io distributor Miniclip, talked to Kotaku about how the game ended up landing on the show.
"We received a call from the House of Cards production team, out of the blue. They already knew about the game and wanted to include it in the show, and naturally we were delighted to be a part of it," he said. "We worked closely with the House of Cards production team: we made a special build of the game that had the Obama skins taken out so that it better fit the House of Cards universe."
Smith went on to say that the fact that House of Cards wanted to feature Agar.io "underlines it as a cultural phenomenon."
Agar.io is a free-to-play multiplayer browser and strategy game that has proven to be a huge hit following its release in 2015. You play as a cell in a petri dish with the goal of expanding your mass by eating other players, while simultaneously avoiding being gobbled up by others.
Underwood compares it in the show to the race for president.
Other games featured in past episodes of House of Cards have included The Stanley Parable and Monument Valley, among others. There is also a scene where Underwood--played by Kevin Spacey--expresses his delight in seeing a PlayStation Vita in a moment that felt a lot like paid product placement.
Additionally, a major Season 3 storyline sees Underwood hiring a former game reviewer to write his biography.
House of Cards has been renewed for a fifth season; who knows what Underwood will play next.
