  • The Tick is Revealed in First Photos from New Spoof Superhero Show

The Tick is back. The antennae-spouting cult superhero is set to make his return to screens this month, when a new live-action series hits Amazon. The first images from the show have been released, and they reveal Guardians of the Galaxy's Peter Serafinowicz as the title character, as well as Watchmen star Jackie Earl Haley as his nemesis The Terror. Check them out below:
The Tick was created by Ben Edlund, and first appeared in 1986 as a spoof of superheroes, initially in a comic strip before heading up his own title in 1988. Edlund has written the new show and in a recent interview with io9 hinted at how it would compare to the current wave of cinematic superheroes.
"It takes us from being only the joker at the corner and puts us into the same pool [as other superhero adaptations]," he said. "It makes the job of making fun of it more challenging because we've got skin in that game.
"Before we shirked action because we weren't obligated to do all of it. With this, our scope and our effects, and what little action we can show, it's designed to be competitive. It's funnier. Before, if you remember, the biggest fight we ever had was a camera shot on Arthur, and [people getting thrown across the frame], and it was not a fight."
This will be the third time the character has been adapted for TV. In the mid-90s he featured in an animated series, while a live-action show was broadcast on Fox in 2001. Athough that only lasted nine episodes, it received strong reviews and has since gained a cult following. A video game was also released in 1994.
The pilot episode of the new show is directed by Wally Pfister, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of such films as Inception, The Dark Knight, and Moneyball. The Tick hits Amazon on August 19.
