Black Panther Movie Adds Angela Bassett
Another member of the Black Panther movie's cast has been revealed today, with Marvel announcing Angela Bassett will appear in the film.
The Academy Award nominee will play the role of Ramonda, the mother of T'Challa/Black Panther. Beyond that, no details were shared about her part or how prominently she'll be featured.
Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) and also stars Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa and Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger. Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) plays Nakia and Danai Guira (The Walking Dead) will play Okoye. We also recently learned Forest Whitaker will be featured in the film, as will Daniel Kaluuya (Sicario), Winston Duke (Person of Interest), and Florence Kasumba (Captain America: Civil War). Andy Serkis may also reprise his Age of Ultron role.
Bassett is best known for her roles in films such as Malcolm X and What's Love Got to Do With It (which earned her an Oscar nomination). More recently, she's appeared in Olympus Has Fallen and has recurring roles on American Horror Story and BoJack Horseman. She also voiced a character in last year's Rainbow Six Siege.
Boseman said last month that Black Panther will be a more serious film than many of the ones Marvel has produced previously. He noted that "darker superhero movies are the ones that I gravitate towards, that I love the most," adding that Black Panther may end up being "a little grittier."
