Images showing Jack Black as Minecraft character Steve have leaked online, giving the internet an early look at how the upcoming Warner Bros-backed Minecraft movie plans to stylise Mojang's blocky world.


The designs, which reportedly first surfaced via notorious webforum 4chan, are now being pulled from social media platform X by copyright claims, Eurogamer has noticed. The takedowns all but confirm the images' legitimacy.


Photos show a bearded Jack Black wearing Steve's trademark blue shirt and jeans, holding a blocky pickaxe. Other images show a mossy-looking Creeper, cuboid bee and a rather cross-eyed pink sheep.

An open console beta is now available for Riot Games' hero shooter, Valorant.
The free-to-play 5v5 shooter was initially released for PC in 2020, but support for current-gen console systems finally rolled out last month through closed playtests.
Right now the open beta is limited to Brazil, Canada, Europe, Japan, and the US, and whilst console players will be able to team up with pals on the other console, there's currently no crossplay available with PC players. Sorry. Riot says it "believes strongly in competitive integrity, and this is the best way for us to keep the experience fair and consistent for players on both console and PC".

Activision has published a 25-page white paper exploring the impact of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) on its multiplayer lobbies, determining that SBMM is better for all players.
As spotted by indie game developer and consultant Rami Ismail, the report – which can be read in full on Activision's official website – outlines an "amazing A/B test" where Activision "secretly progressively turned off SBMM and monitored retention… and turns out everyone hated it, with more quitting, less playing, and more negative blowouts".
Activision announced plans to launch the series of white papers back in April, and has already considered the impact connections and Time to Match has on online play.

In the pantheon of fighting games – a genre in which the community typically moves along once a new entry arrives – there are those specific games that stand above the others and maintain a legendary status. Games like Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, and Capcom Vs. SNK 2 have maintained huge communities in the 20-plus years since they launched and are held in high regard by the fighting game community to this day. There's one more example with a particularly mythic status: SNK's 1999 classic Garou: Mark of the Wolves, which was not only was a soft-reboot of the Fatal Fury series but also the last of that series to ever release, as SNK shifted focus onto The King of Fighters as its premiere fighting game franchise.
For years and years, I've been waiting on a follow-up to Mark of the Wolves – which was apparently nearly complete before SNK went bankrupt back in 2001. Every single time EVO would come around and SNK would hit the stage with a new announcement, only for it to be a new Samurai Shodown or King of Fighters (both of which were bangers, mind you), I'd be disappointed. SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda, who also led development on KOF and Samurai Shodown, has been vocal about wanting to return to the game, outright saying in 2022 that he "went back to SNK to complete Garou". This finally came to pass at EVO later that year, when Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves was confirmed.
After a couple more trailers throughout 2023, and making its first playable appearance at EVO Japan earlier this year, City of the Wolves was confirmed for a Summer Game Fest appearance. So, after finding out I was going to the event this year, naturally the very first appointment I made was going to be the fighting game I've waited 25 years for (okay, I only played Garou for the first time like 6 years ago, but it's far more dramatic to put it that way). And after getting to play the game, there's no better way to describe it than hot damn, they nailed it.

Steam has updated how demos "appear and behave" within the Steam library.
In a post to the official website, Valve said that with "thousands of playable demos launching on Steam every year, and millions of players trying them out, we've noticed some trends in feedback from both developers and players about the process and functionality. We've put together an update based on that feedback".
Going forward, you'll be able to add demos to your library without having to immediately install them. Just like full games, you can simply click "add to library" and download later on them when you're ready.

Grasshopper Manufacture is set to run its second annual showcase later this week on 31st July.
Just like last year's presentation, Grasshopper Direct 2024 will hopefully give us a glimpse of what's next from renowned game maker Suda51, whose prior work includes Killer7, the No More Heroes series, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Shadows of the Damned.
As yet there's been no hints at what's to come, but the team says it's currently "working our asses off" to ensure this year's direct goes off without a hitch. Last year's direct aired a good hour or so after the planned window, which is probably why Grasshopper hasn't yet shared a time for the presentation.

PlayStation has today unveiled a new DualSense controller, inspired by upcoming PS5 release Astro Bot.
The controller itself boasts all the features you would expect from a DualSense, such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. These will all come into play when Astro Bot releases later this year (although, with more textures to feel through the controller than with Astro's Playroom). So far, so normal.
Things get a little more exciting when you get to the cosmetic side of things, however. The upcoming controller has Astro's blue accents on the handles and buttons, some sci-fi style grooves and - the most eye-catching feature in every sense - Astro's "trademark playful pair of eyes" on the DualSense's touchpad.

It started with reports on NeoGAF that extremely rare 'new/old' stock of original Xbox One consoles - the so-called 'VCR' or 'set-top box' model - were unable to function owing to the lack of a system software update for the hardware. Used consoles sold on eBay and factory-reset also have the same issue. Based on our own testing from Xbox One consoles brought out of storage, systems operating on older firmware revisions error out when connected to Xbox Live. We've informed Microsoft, we're confident the problem will be fixed, but the situation raises awkward questions about the future prospects of console hardware reliant on an internet connection to fully function.
Let's be clear about what we're talking about. As far as we're aware, the problem does not impact 2016's Xbox One S hardware revision. We're talking about the launch model, the set-top box edition. And it doesn't apply to all consoles - if every single Xbox One 'VCR' out there couldn't get online, I'm sure we would have heard about it sooner. It seems to be Xbox One hardware that is running older firmware that has the biggest risk of not being able to update. Two of our consoles are running 2017 dashboards, the other a 2018 revision. None of them can update - not from the internet, nor from USB via the downloadable offline installer.
By extension, we can assume that any affected console that can't update that is then factory reset (perhaps by a user looking to resell the console) cannot function at all, effectively 'bricking' the hardware until Microsoft can come up with a solution. If affected units aren't reset, the dashboard works, games running from discs works, but anything requiring an online connection won't function. Without access to the latest system software revision, it's impossible to access Xbox Live or any of its features, and we can safely assume that digital purchases requiring an online check-in also won't work unless the machine is set-up as primary account holder or 'home console'.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard looks set to be the chattiest game in BioWare's fantasy series to date, with 140,000 lines of dialogue included.


That's up from the 88,000 lines of dialogue included within Dragon Age: Inquisition - which is believed by fans to have been the wordiest BioWare game until now.


"It takes a long time to record 700 characters, you know - 80,000 lines or 140,000 lines with all the Rooks," Dragon Age: The Veilguard creative director John Epler told GamesRadar, when asked why the game had taken so long to make. "It just takes time to make good."

Starfield fans believe a trademark for "Starborn" registered by Bethesda parent company Zenimax earlier this month points to the game's currently unrevealed second expansion, likely due in 2025.
Bethesda's space RPG released last year, and is set to launch its first expansion Shattered Space in the coming months. In conversation with YouTuber MrMattyPlays back in June, Bethesda's Todd Howard confirmed there would be at least one more expansion to come after Shattered Space, stating the studio was already "planning for the one after this".
It now appears that this 'planning' has made further progress, thanks to that aforementioned trademark. As spotted by Timur222 on social media platform X, Bethesda has filed a trademark for something known as Starborn. What is a Starborn? We'll explain below - so beware of small Starfield spoilers.

Balatro is the latest thing that can seemingly run the seminal 90s shooter Doom.
"Literally nobody asked for it, but here it is: Doom on Balatro," announced u/UwUDev on reddit, appending a video that proves they've somehow embedded Zoom into the poker game's Joker collection screen.
"Honestly, I didn't think anyone would care. I'd just done it for fun/challenge, but since the community seems to like it, I'm planning something even more impressive and stupid," UwuDev said.

Doctor Who and Star Trek are officially crossing over, with David Tennant's iconic Tenth Doctor and his future wife River Song meeting characters from the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks series.


The crossover will take place as a limited-time event beginning 1st August in two mobile games: Star Trek: Lower Decks - The Badgey Directive and Doctor Who: Lost in Time.


Events in both games will show different perspectives of the same wibbly-wobbly space-time macguffin, with Ten onboard Lower Deck's USS Cerritos and River Song joined by crewmembers Lieutenant Brad Boimler and Ensign Beckett Mariner.
