Micron's 960GB Solid State Drive is Cheaper Than You Think

For less than $600, you can own a terabyte-class SSD.

We're a little late in bringing this to your attention, but it's worth noting that Micron is making a concerted effort to offer relatively affordable, large-capacity solid state drives (SSDs). We say it's relative because dropping half a dozen Benjamins on a single storage device is not something every PC user is in a position to do, but for those who can afford it, Micron's 960GB SSD is actually a reasonable value.
Let's compare against the competition. If you head over to Newegg and search only the largest capacity SSDs (513GB - 1TB), here's a sampling of what you'll find:

• OCZ Octane 1TB: $2,500
• Intel 320 Series 600GB: $850
• Intel 910 Series Ramsdale PCI-E 800GB: $4,099

Micron says it's M500 Series (sold under the Micron name to OEMs and Crucial brand to consumers) will ship in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB capacities, the largest of which will initially be priced under $600. That's less than $0.63 per gigabyte.
With regards to performance, the M500 uses a SATA 6Gbps controller combined with Micron's cusom firmware to deliver up to 500MB/s read and up to 400MB/s write performance, and up to 80,000 IOPS.
The M500 will be available to purchase sometime during the first quarter of 2013.
