The straight dope on Oculus VRYou may have noticed that over the years, Maximum PC sometimes doesn't have a filter -- that's part of where our "Minimum BS" tagline comes from. With that in mind, we sent Online Managing Editor and number one Geraldo Rivera fan Jimmy Thang on a mission to seek out and interview Oculus VR founder Nate Mitchell. He did that, and he wasted no time addressing the elephant in the room -- selling out to Facebook and the level of anger over the acquisition.
"I think a lot of the initial anger has subsided... People are still skeptical of Facebook, and skeptical of the relationship of Oculus and Facebook. I think a lot of that initial gut reaction has gone away, but people are still skeptical that Facebook isn't going to poison Oculus," Mitchell said. "Now, all that said, in the last, almost a year since we announced the acquisition, things have gone incredibly well. I think people would be hard pressed to point to anything Facebook or Oculus has done that has been different from our original mission."
Mitchell went on to talk about open sourcing SDK1 and expanding its work force by leaps and bounds. On hindsight, Mitchell is happy with the acquisition and the direction the company is going.
As to Facebook flooding Oculus with ads and cheesing up VR with gimmicks, Mitchell said it's totally fair for naysayers to be skeptical, but ultimately he thinks Oculus will prove them wrong over time.
This is just some of what's contained in the 23-minute interview. Check it out below!
