I, for my sins, enjoy parry mechanics. I use 'parry slop' lovingly as a shorthand to refer to action games I want to play which feature parrying as a predominant mechanic. I am also a Call of Duty campaign enjoyer, and those games rarely feature any melee combat, let alone something as advanced as parrying. So, to say I was genuinely surprised to see Modern Warfare 4 bring the two together would be an understatement.
Right, let's get one important thing out of the way first: I've played a fair bit more of Dawn of War 4's main campaign, after my initial impressions of a single mission last year, and I think it is very good. The action is as screen-filling as ever, the Orks are a delight, and the combat director, which sees individual combatants lock onto each other with bespoke animations when groups fight in melee, remains a genuine feat of RTS engineering. I'll have much more to say on that front soon, though I'd like a little more time with it first.
Infinity Ward opened up early access to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's DMZ extraction mode overnight, meaning anyone who has pre-ordered a copy can now play the game's campaign as well as DMZ. And while early reactions to DMZ are fairly positive, there's one issue in particular, which a number of players have experienced, that has the capability of ending a round as soon as it begins.
Who doesn't love a big swing, a bold new direction, especially when so many video game publishers seem increasingly determined to walk the safest route? While Stranger Than Heaven might look familiar at first glance - particularly if you're a fan of Like a Dragon developer RGG's other third-person action games - it differs where it counts. And to my mind, it's one of the most exciting games the studio has worked on in a while.
CD Projekt Red has detailed the substantial update coming to Cyberpunk 2077, revealing a new dual-wielding skill for pistols and revolvers, cyberware customisation, cross-platform mod support, and a brand-new Edgerunners-related story quest featuring voice actors from the Netflix anime show.
After over three decades of iconic RPGs, developer BioWare is closing down and its in-development Mass Effect game is no more. The move comes just months after corporate owner EA was bought out by a group of investment firms for $55 billion.
Not only is EA closing down BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect - Electronic Arts has now announced a heap of drastic changes that include cutting 400 jobs across the company, pausing development on a project connected to The Sims, and bringing together Respawn and DICE.
A new Star Wars: Battlefront game is reportedly in the works, and it's said to have Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi studio Respawn working on it, as well as Battlefield and Battlefront developer DICE.
