  • Rumor Mill has AMD Readying Radeon-Brand SSDs

Advanced Micro Devices is apparently trying to flex its Radeon brand everywhere it can. In addition to video cards and system memory, both of which are markets currently served by the Radeon brand, it's rumored that AMD is getting ready to launch a line of Radeon solid state drives (SSDs). If this works out, perhaps one day you could build an entire PC with nothing but Radeon parts.
News of AMD's expansion into SSDs comes from SemiAccurate, which notes that there are several questions yet to be answered. Chief among them is exactly who will AMD source its SSDs from? Patriot, VisionTek, and XFX all currently build Radeon brand memory, but only one of those companies -- Patriot -- builds SSDs.
There's also the question as to why AMD would want to go down this road in the first place. There are plenty of SSD players already, including OCZ, which just recently decided to concede the budget SSD market to the likes of Intel, Micron, and Samsung. It's unclear if AMD wants to target budget, mainstream, and/or enthusiasts users.
You won't have to wait long to find out what AMD's up to. According to SemiAccurate, Radeon brand SSDs are bound for store shelves soon.
