  • Super Talent Announces High Speed mSATA 3 SSD for Portable Devices

Faster mSATA SSDs could lead to upgradeable tablets.

You probably haven't given much thought to upgrading your tablet PC's built-in storage, primarily because your hands are tied. If you need more storage, you can buy a microSD card (if your tablet supports it), use an external USB storage device (again, if your tablet supports it), or tap into the cloud. But what if you could swap out the built-in SSD for a faster, more capacious model? That's wishful thinking at the moment, but if companies like Super Talent keep releasing performance-oriented mSATA drives, perhaps tablet makers will take notice.
Super Talent's newest storage device is the mSATA 3 SSD. It uses Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND flash memory, features a SATA 6Gbps interface, and offers read and write speeds of up to 550MB/s and 500MB/s, respectively. Those kinds of figures are a welcome sight if tablets are to be a part of the "PC plus" era, as Lenovo dubs it.
"With tablets taking over the market and becoming a norm in households, it is only a matter of time before people begin to feel the need to upgrade storage space on their portable devices. Our mSATA 3 SSD which provides up to 120 GB of storage is the perfect solution for these users," Super Talent said in a statement.
Super Talent's mSATA 3 SSD line comes in 30GB, 60GB, 64GB, and 120GB capacities. It's unclear if they'll be sold to end-users for SFF systems, or targeted only at OEMs for integration into mobile devices.
