Best Indian chai you will ever taste. The pre-made stuff doesn't even resemble real chai.
6 cups water
1 good-sized fresh ginger root, about .25 lbs, thinly-sliced
1 tsp whole cardamom seeds
2-4 cinnamon sticks
1 tbsp whole cloves
3-5 tbsp black tea
Bring the water to a boil. Add the cinnamon and cardamom. Let boil for about 5 min. Add ginger, let boil for about 5 min. Add black tea and cloves, let boil for about 5 min. If the water boils off too much, add another cup or two. Adjust amount of tea & ginger depending on how strong you like it; enough ginger will give the drink a real spicy punch, enough tea will give it an incredible caffeine burst.
The drink will be dark brown (darker than coffee) and a bit murky. Filter into a container (such as a large measuring cup or a coffee pot) and serve hot. Best served with at least 1/2 milk and a tablespoon of honey.
