  • The Doom Slayer is back with a vengeance in Doom: The Dark Ages. This feudal-flavoured first-person frenzy promises revamped combat and revitalized visuals for current-gen consoles and PCs. In broad strokes, this is a strong technical success but how well does the game play out across PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and especially the horsepower-challenged Xbox Series S? In all cases, users are getting a good experience, but the premium Xbox console seems to get the smoothest experience overall - even compared to PS5 Pro - while the junior Xbox is still recognisably the same game, but with very low rendering resolutions and a haircut to some visual features.

        • There are only so many ways a game can begin, or so I thought. I've seen so many beginnings they've all begun to merge into one, and because of it, they've begun to collectively fade from view. A game will begin and a loved one will be taken, and then I'll probably utter a vow of revenge and set about trying to realise it. Something like that. Honestly, I've stopped paying much attention. I don't know who the characters are at the beginning, or the places we're in, so I let myself be swept along until things start to make sense, to sink in, and sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

          • Over a fortnight since its launch, the state of the Oblivion Remastered's performance on console is still a disappointment. The dust has settled on an ambitious, visually striking Unreal Engine 5 overhaul - which is also faithfully running the original Bethesda logic behind the scenes. However, the more we look at the console versions, the more problematic they become. No platform is spared of issues: whether it's PS5, PS5 Pro or either Xbox Series machine, all struggle with traversal hitches while roaming the open world. Secondly, there's major sub-60fps frame-rates, where I've also discovered that performance slowly degrades with more playing time - quite possibly down to a memory leak. And finally, software freezes are the icing on the cake, with all PlayStation and Xbox platforms crashing to the system menu on loading a save one to many times.

                • For those of you thinking of firing up Revenge of the Savage Planet this weekend - and why wouldn't you; it's available for no additional cost for Game Pass subscribers on PC and Xbox, and I had a blast with its predecessor - a little PSA: co-op doesn't work if you're appearing as offline.
